Up the river without a paddle?

This week’s Sunday School is all about why the right help matters.

On Wednesday evening, I took my brand-new paddleboard come kayak out on the river with friends. I’d been looking forward to it — fresh air, calm water, good company — the perfect way to slow down midweek.

But the first stretch was anything but smooth.

My seat was in the wrong position so paddling felt awkward. My life jacket wasn’t quite right and kept digging in. Even the paddle itself felt clunky, with connectors sitting right where my hands would normally go.

By the time we reached the first lock, I was uncomfortable, frustrated, and not really enjoying it.

The difference? I wasn’t out there on my own.

The friends I’d gone with were experienced kayakers. They spotted what wasn’t working, helped adjust my seat, showed me a few tricks to pull up to the bank (after several failed attempts on my part!), and gave me tips on how to handle the paddle properly.

And that was it. Everything shifted. The way back felt effortless, and I finally got to enjoy what I came for — being out in nature, unwinding, and laughing with friends.

It made me realise how much this mirrors business.

How often do we try to power through with the wrong setup, the wrong tools, or no real idea how to fix what’s not working? When sometimes, the smartest move is to lean on someone who’s been there before and knows how to make it easier.

That’s the lesson I’m taking from this week — and what I want you to take too.

The right help changes everything.

Your task this week:

Think of one thing in your business that you could use guidance with. Then find the right person (or people) to help you.

And if that thing happens to be marketing? You know where I am. I’ll make sure you’re not up the river without a paddle.
